If you’re like me, you’ve heard the term SEO time and time again. However, most people only have a very vague understanding of SEO and what it really means for your website.

What Is SEO?
For starters, the acronym “SEO” stands for Search Engine Optimization.
So essentially, SEO is the act of optimizing your website pages and posts to be visible to search engines like Google and Bing.
You see, although it might seem like Google knows everything, the truth is that Google actually knows very little, and to “know” as much as it does, it has to source its information from the billions of websites that exist online.
Therefore, when a website is optimized, search engines will easily understand the context of the information of that website, which will make it more likely that said website will be displayed to internet users who are searching for information.

Unfortunately, although SEO is a relatively simple concept, the process of optimizing a website isn’t so clear-cut.

How Search Engines Work
When an internet user wants to find information online, they typically users a search engine like Google, where they’ll type in a search query, which is also known as a keyword.
The search engine will then scan the internet for all of the most relevant information that it can find to, hopefully, solve the user’s search query appropriately.
However, the problem is that a search engine doesn’t have eyes or ears as a human internet user does. Therefore, search engines use a range of alternative methods for reading and understanding websites.
To do this, search engines use specific website data such as your site’s metadata, which will help explain to the search engine what exactly it’s looking at on any given website.
Metadata is used to describe several different website metrics such as your page or post categories and tags, meta-description, and title-tags, all of which are some of the first pieces of information a search engine looks at when crawling a website.
Therefore, if you’re able to optimize all of this meta-data for a given keyword, usually one that has a high search volume and low competition, makes it so that you can seamlessly attract search engine users to your site.
Getting It Right – Modern SEO
In the end, planning and implementing a good SEO strategy is essential to drawing in new prospects and obtaining potential new customers online.
